Off the subject slightly.I would just like to say I think its great to see such a well put together website for Isle of Wight petanque. Well done!

On the topic of coaching i agree no one is to good for coaching, players and especially the juniors need to be shown the right tactics to prosper. Im glad to see Heather is Youth Development officer because she is very good at oraganising and she plays the game correctly, it will be good for the juniors.

If anyone from the Island feels that they would like to improve there game and wants coaching, i am more than willing to help. feel free to contact me.

Qusetion- Who makes a good coach?

i agree with sean that this is a good site. well done!!!

i think it depends on the persons personality to if they would make a good coach. you need someone who you can talk to and get along with and who isnt initmidating.also a good coach needs to be commited to helping the team and willing to give up some time to help the team.

i think that a coach also needs to be able to encourage the person they are helping and need to keep the person to one stance. they also need to be experianced.

i think Sean Predagaust (sorry if spelt wrong) would be a good coach. however so is Kevin Gifford.

Who makes a good Coach? Someone who listens, watches and is able to explain what they want from you. Someone who enables others to do well, gives confidence, sets clear achievable goals and knows when to back off and let you settle.

Off the subject anyone got any clean petanque jokes for a just for fun page on the Website Question

Hows this for the start of a fun page - Hope the names are not for any Island Partnership, its just meant in fun.

John and his partner, Mark, were playing in the region's big knockout competition, the "Champions of Champions". Prize money was 1,000 each. They were both on form and had made it into the finals where they were leading 12-10 in a closely fought match. John slowly walked to the coche, carefully studying the terrain, before returning to the circle and squatted down ready to point what they hoped would be the winning boule.
Just as he was about to play, a funeral procession passed by the terrain. John stood up, took off his cap and stood with his eyes closed waiting for the procession to pass. Mark couldn't believe what he was seeing.
What the hell do you think you're doing? he said, We're through to the final, you're just about to play the winning boule for 1,000 and you stop like that.
Please, replied John, have a little respect - we were married for 25 years.

Problem with coaching is it's all about playing the right way. Surely we should be teaching people the art of 'dark' shooting!

Wink

Just kidding.

Glen.

PS. Good job on the website Tim Smile

"Dark Shooting" eh!!! Well certainly the floodlights on some terrains could be better but sure thats not what you meant. Do you have a scar or be called "he must not be named" to be skilled in the art of "Dark Shooting" ????? Twisted Evil

Coaching is very much an art, some people will like the impressionist where as some people will like the Fauvism and others pop art. For me a coach is not someone who will teach you a technique that they think will work for you, a coach is someone who should make your comfortable with your style of play and make slight adjustments, most of all a coach is someone who should boost your confidence, encourage you to work as a team and also be there as a guru.

More importantly a player should recognise when he/she needs coaching and they should approach the coach not the other way around, this therefore gives the coach an indication that the student wants to be taught and therefore will take on board the coaches advice.

A coach should also be the person who not only gives advice but is able to take it himself, to look at new techniques, not of the physical game, but looking at further coaching enabling the student to have the right frame of mind to play the perfect shot every time, somebody would need to look at other mediums such as psychology and breathing techniques. It is ok to teach someone how to throw the perfect way but it is another things to control the same throw in a time of overwhelming pressure, that is where these other techniques play their part.

I hope this article is of some use.

Thank you
