There have been and are some very good players on the Island, Ive only been playing for 16 years, but in my opinion the best Ive seen are:
Pointer: Steve Peach - that high lob was phenominal, the amount of practice it must have taken to get that technique right... any shooter playing against him needed to be on top form to be able to beat him.
Shooter: Kev Gifford is the obvious choice, consistantly good, and always willing to pass on his experience to players both young and old. I also want to mention Mr Peach's partner in crime, whos name temporarily leaves me errrr Bernie??... He was/is pretty awesome too, his action is extremely simple, nothing other than his arm moves, rarely missed a shot.
That my tuppence worth, there are of course loads of others that I could mention, especially some of the younger players, whom can all be as good and better than the above. |

| I have not played for that many years but when i started the people to beat were Mike Haile and Mike Selle. At present i consider Sean Prendergast the best shooter and Alan Wright is a good pointer. But what do i know. |

I haven't been playing long enough to comment on the "Ever" and what do we mean by the "Greatest"
Someone who wins alot ?
Someone who encourages others
Someone who's attitude to winning or perhaps more importantly to losing is a credit to them.
Someone who is a great team player
Someone who doesn't take the Pee out of less able players
Someone with great tactics
Someone with great technique
Someone who keeps their temper under control
All of the above
Now let me think er
No can't think of anyone !!!!!!!
Can think of loads of people who meet many of the above. Some of whom are some of the "Best Island Players and some of whom are not seen as the "Best"
Well thats exhausted me now, all those "someone who's" time for a Cuppa

I would single out 2 very different players.
Steve Peach - very competitive, a great pointer. It's a shame for the Island that he stopped playing when he did.
Sean Prendegast - in my opinion the most consistent shooter the Island has produced, has an unequalled record for winning Island comps, the only shooter from the IW who I've seen be consistently competitive at a grand prix level in the UK.
What clearly sets these 2 players apart is the fact that they have both won the IW Singles 4 or 5 times each, which really speaks for itself.

Pointer- Alan wright ( The Machine)
His pointing is tremendous, not only the best Island pointer but one of the best in the country. His pointing can sometimes get annnoying it's that good . He also has a great attiude and is a joy to play with.
Middle man- Rob Binnie
An unsung hero of the petanque world. When he points he has so much control over the ball and is able to generate ridiculous amounts of spin when he needs to. has even been compared to Steve peach with his high lobs but rarely brings them out in competeive play. his shooting can somtimes be a bit random but definately hits more than he misses and stays around the head when he does hit.
Shooter- choice of three- Kev Gifford, Sean Newton and Shirley Hiscock(TOUGH CHOICE)
Kev Gifford- Probably the most consitent shooter on the island and has a good success rate in comps. Taught me how to shoot properly.
Sean Newton- Someone I admired when i first strted the game because his shooting was awsome and second to none when it comes to tactics.
Shirley hiscock- Second best female shooter next to Vanessa Webb. Never quite fullfils her potential but is undoubtedly a great lady shooter who can out shoot the best of the male bunch easily at times. |

Tricky to only have one in each category so....
Pointer:
Steve Peach - great high lob,
Alan Wright - just so consistent one of the best in the country
Middle:
Rob Binnie - outrageoulsy good boule control when pointing and a good shooter
Kev Gifford - good all rounder
Shooter:
Sean Prendergast - naturally good, best the Island has seen
Paddy Cunningham - another natural, never looked an effort
Sean Newton - on a good day fantastic but prone to
Tactician:
Alan Wright
Sean Newton
Glen Jones
All of the above have consistently been the best players on the island |
